The NCC collates generic reports from the regular supply of production and sales data it receives from its member manufacturers. The products represented are tourers, motorhomes, holiday homes (all these are leisure accommodation vehicles) and residential park homes. This information is distilled into monthly reports which members use for benchmarking purposes and which also act as the basis for forecasting. Individual company data is held confidentially and not shared. Market share information is not produced by the NCC.

The UK market is also supplied from non-member sources, mainly from Continental Europe. Individuals may also make private purchases from overseas. The proportion of total UK sales related to this varies from sector to sector, but is not significant. In the annual data the NCC produces for public consumption, allowances are included for such non-member activity.

The Caravan Industry in the UK:

contributes around £6 billion p.a. to the UK economy (revenue from sales of products and related services, holiday bookings etc)
employs about 115,000 people, including part time and seasonal staff (mainly on parks)
1.5 million people regularly take touring caravan / motorhome holidays (The Caravan Club alone boasts 1,000,000 members while the Camping and Caravanning Club has over half a million members.)
Caravanning is an important contributor to UK tourism (source = VisitEngland’s GBTS Annual Survey 2010):
- 69.9 million nights away were spent on camping and caravanning trips in the UK in 2010. This amounts to 19% of all nights away from home (including business as well as leisure trips) spent in the UK.
- Camping and caravanning is the next largest trip type after staying with friends/relatives, self catering and hotels/guest houses.
- Holidays are the main purpose of nights spent away from home in the UK (55% of all nights away) which, not surprisingly, rises to 93% in the case of all camping and caravanning nights away (65.2 million).
- Of the total of 69.9 million nights away on camping and caravanning, 52% were spent at seaside destinations and 25% in the countryside/villages.
- 94% of nights spent on camping and caravanning took place over April to October
- Total spend on nights away from home in the UK in 2010 was £19.8 billion. Camping and caravanning amounted to £2.3 billion, of which 93% (£2.1 billion).
